Heads back strained in Russia

The market niche of small cargo-passenger commercial cars, known as «heels», by a strange coincidence, was free on the Russian market. This happened because of a rather expensive proposal from leading foreign automakers. Now the situation wants to fix. The implementation of a number of projects began, and our material about them.

Few drew attention to a rather strange event. Representatives of the largest Russian automaker AvtoVAZ announced that the domestic enterprise will not develop and launch a promising model LADA VAN into production. Although in a special investment contract, signed by AvtoVAZ and the Ministry of Agriculture, this model is recorded among the promising automobiles of domestic auto giant.

In addition, French automaker Renault in the middle of last year has stopped sale Utility Vehicles Renault Dokker, which we have traditionally called the «heel». Recall that the French «heel» has come to the Russian market in the second half of 2017, last year the French automaker managed to sell in our market in all 302 «heel.» It is interesting that in 2014 the French had planned to start pre-production model Dokker at the Moscow plant Renault, but had to cancel due to the collapse of the ruble and reduce demand on the Russian market. It was planned that the price should be positioned between the Dokker Lada Largus and imported «heels» like models Peugeot Partner or the Volkswagen Caddy.

Today, this segment of the utility vehicle is practically free. Here there is only the Italian FIAT Doblo with his model. However, its sales fell short of last year to five hundred units, which, in principle, a fairly low figure. If a whole characterize this market segment of commercial vehicles in Europe, where such cars are very popular developed by small and medium businesses. They are used for the delivery of small consignments weighing from a few dozen to several hundred kilograms. For such a load to drive the van, like the Ford Transit, impractical and uneconomical.

In the USSR, such «heels» were produced in Izhevsk Auto Plant

Surely, this marketonal calculation and has become the starting point for the start of the project to organize the production of «Cabinets». At the PSMA plant in Kaluga, the release of French commercial models Peugeot Partner and Citroen Berlingo began. These are famous in Europe and beyond the massage cars.

It is noteworthy that most recently, in 2019, the French automaker PSA (today he is part of the new Stellantis Alliance) turned out the sale of these models in the Russian market. We will remind, it happened in August 2019, that is, almost two years ago. And that’s what is interesting: both French Renault, and the other French automaker PSA counted this segment of the Russian commercial car market unprofitable for their models.

However, in September last year, the French automaker announced that at the Kaluga enterprise PSMA starts the Cabinet Assembly of Peugeot Partner.

Peugeot Partner, Citroen Berlingo and Opel Combo are produced in two versions — short (body length 1.8 m, volume 3.3 m³) and long (body length 2.05 m, 3.7 m³ volume). The folded seat of the passenger will allow you to transport and long more than three meters. Load capacity of all versions — 732 kg.

These cars, both partner and Berlingo and Combo, are represented in Russia with two types of engines — a gasoline 1,6-liter unit with a capacity of 115 hp. and a 90-strong turbodiesel of the same volume. Transmission — exclusively mechanical, five-speed. On passenger versions of these cars there may be an automatic transmission.

Give a french diesel, or we did not have such a diesel

Without deep localization, put competitive prices for these cars, and therefore cars can «do not go» to the market. In addition, the preparation of production in Russia is too expensive. But the French automaker still decided on this step.

The next step in the production program Peugeot Partner / Citroen Berlingo / Opel Combo was the launch of motor production at the PSMA factory in Kaluga. Engine production began in the second half of May.

It is noteworthy that the release of diesel engines is one of the conditions of the Special Investment Agreement (SPIK), which was signed by Peugeot and the Ministry of Industry RF.

Preparation for the production of diesel engines from last year, and a separate assembly workshop was organized under the output of the force aggregates, since the motors were not released before the enterprise. Test assembly of diesel engines began in February, and now in Kaluga has already been collected by the trade engines that will appear on mass machines.

The Russian registration received a four-cylinder 1.6 HDI engine of the DV6 family, which has long been known not only on cars of the French concern PSA, but also on Ford, Volvo, Mazda and Mini models. 1560 cubic engine. SM develops the power of 90 hp and 215-230 nm.

It is assumed that these motors will install the Stellantis Alliance models produced in Kaluga — these are sedans of Peugeot 408 and Citroen C4, Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo, as well as vans and minibuses Citroen Jumpy, Space Tourer, Peugeot Expert / Traveler and Opel Zafira Life / Vivaro. So far, such motors have been supplied to the Kaluga plant from France.

Localized diesel engines comply with EURO-5 and EURO-6.1 environmental standards. Part of the motors are planned to be exported outside Russia. Not yet reported on the production capacity of the Motor Assembly Line.

Maybe this time the French are lucky in Russia, and their cars will not only find their niche, but will become the most popular in it. Prerequisites for this are laid.
