Moskvich 401 — the first folk car of the country of the Soviets9 октября, 2021
Our compatriots never missed at the invent of various nicknames, not only in relation to each other, but also, for example, cars. So: I did not have time to appear on the roads of the young country of the advice of the first folk car «Moskvich-401», as the car immediately gave the new name «Elephant»! Is it an offensive or vice versa, a sign of pride? Let’s deal with and find out what was able to conquer the Soviet citizens-motorists Moskvich-401.
The car was called the «elephant» due to two characteristic features:
1 — the most common body color — gray;
2 — a characteristic soused profile.
By the way, the full name of the car is Muscovite 401-420. The composite index (according to the factory labeling system operating in those times) was decrypted very easily: the first part indicated the model of the power unit, the second is the type and brand of the body.
Of course, in the people nobody called «Moskvich». Used simpler, abbreviated options.
And what was actually hiding under the hood and inside the body of this popular car in the late 40s? People interested in all that is related to the creation and operation of cars perfectly understood that the «elephant» is nothing more than an exact copy of the German «Opel Cadet» of the 1938 sample. For obvious reasons (they wanted to praise their engineers and designers), it was not written in the press and did not tell on the radio, but the fact remains.
No! Still, the difference was, and it is worth saying about it. On the German «Oplia», which killed on the roads of the country «Were Socialism,» the corresponding emblem was concerned! Well, there were no problems with the number of such cars in the first postwar years. On the roads of the country went quite a lot of trophy cars!
With the advent of Muscovites, the origin of the domestic auto industry is associated, as such aimed at the massive Soviet user. It is this car (the first in the USSR) sold everyone and having an appropriate amount of money. At first, even the queues were not and become
The happy owner of Moskvich-401 with the same success could both an accountant and movie star!
Motorists of those times were not so sophisticated as their contemporaries, they did not attach the meanings that they went by car, which was developed about 10 years ago. In truth, and in such a state, the remake «Opel Cadet» looked quite worthy.
Taking as the basis of the «German» team of the Moscow Automobile Plant actively took up the modernization, improvement of the model. And many developments turned out to be very progressive and promising. For example, a technical solution for the creation of a all-metal body made it possible to get rid of the wooden frame (and there was one in the design of many firms, including foreign).
The original was the rear suspension consisting of a solid bridge and a springs. But for independent suspension, an interesting and very tricky solution was made — to compose in a single jet and springs, and shock absorbers. The official name of such suspension dubonne, «in honor of the inventor. But our heavens also distinguished themselves, offering their name of the node — on «sides».
Under the hood «Solid» 23 horsepower
Now these indicators will cause only a light grin, and at that time it was almost a record! Low-flaped four-cylinder DVS with a working volume 1.1. l Almost three times (23l.s. against 9 hp) exceeded the power of the first post-war version of the French auto industry Citroen 2 CV. So we could almost be proud of the high technical achievements and the genius of socialist engineers …
By the way, thanks to a number of «modifications», our specialists have already managed to develop the power of the motor, bringing the indicator to 26 «horses».
The 6-volt system of the car’s electrical equipment fully corresponded to the spirit of the times and did not differ in originality. All optics are 2 front headlights, and behind one lamp (left), which listed with a weak red light
An interesting story associated with the electrician of this folk car was shared by journalists of the popular publication «driving». It turns out that in 1962, an innovation was introduced in the Union, which binds all motorists to use turn signs. The management of the journal went to meet people and published a detailed instruction that allows you to independently install and connect the control. As a result, this issue of the magazine became the most readable and in demand among the population. And the editors were filled with letters (the number of bags could not be counted) with a request to send a detailed scheme!
The trunk as such did not have any car. The sparette was fastened outside (and no one tried to steal — that’s time …). For the transport of any things and items used the roof trunk. Something could be laid behind the seats of the rear row. All were glad.
And so, modestly, the driver’s seat looked in Spartan:
Just in case: the handle to the right of the steering wheel is the gear lever moved for convenience from the floor to the steering column.
Interesting solutions for the car Moskvich-401 were quite a lot. Almost all of them became history. But this is part of our history. And let the car were not bright and stylish, but it was preserved for a long time in memory of our fathers and grandfathers!
