Replacing the compressor: why the oil balancing is so important

Like a human heart, the compressor provides circulation of a vital substance — refrigerant, which is critical for proper operation of the air conditioning system. Its work is constructed as follows: the compressor sucks the gas refrigerant from the evaporator, compresses it and under high pressure and in high temperature is supplied to the condenser, where it turns into a liquid. Next, the liquid refrigerant enters the evaporator again, where it goes into a gaseous state, cooling the air circulating in the car. It becomes clear why the installation of a guaranteed high-quality compressor is desirable, which is able to simultaneously provide rapid air cooling to a comfortable temperature, reduce fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

The most important procedure when replacing the compressor in the air conditioning system is balancing (level leveling) of oil, especially when installing a new compressor on a car.

Performing an oil balancing in the compressor, you should use the desired type and the required amount of oil. The purpose of this procedure is to make sure that the oil in the system is flooded to the right level.

The amount of oil already contained in the installed compressor may vary from full fill (236 ml) to half of the required volume. Or the oil may be completely absent. Typically, the amount of oil poured into the compressor is indicated by the compressor manufacturer.

The second important point is the viscosity of the oil. Here without questions: use oil only with viscosity recommended by the compressor manufacturer. If, for example, in the compressor it is recommended to use the viscous oil PAG 150, and instead it is flooded with lighter PAG 46, then the occurrence of noise when the compressor is working or its premature breakdown.

After pouring the oil into the compressor before it is installed, it is also recommended to be checked the compressor clutch at least four times. Thus, two tasks are solved. When rotating the coupling, the oil is driven through the compressor. Thus, the risk of damage to the compressor is reduced due to the lack of lubricant on the bearings, and the initial torque is reduced when the coupling is first turned on. This is especially important for some compressors, which have a high initial torque caused by their design. If, when you turn on this compressor, the torque is too large, it can cause the burst of the drive belt or stop the engine.

Coupling is usually performed manually or with a horn key. Instead of a key, you can use a special tool for turning the compressor. It performs the same function as the horn key, but is installed on the threaded sleeve of the coupling.

The turning tool is used on those couplings where the usual horn key cannot be used due to the design features, or in cases where the key has a loose gearing. Using the tool, turn the coupling is much easier. This operation can be performed both on the installed and dismantled node.

Instead of the horn key, the use of the key is categorically excluded. Washing the clutch using the end key (for a nut or shaft screw) can lead to a change in the air gap between the drive dial of the coupling and the plug of the compressor. And this is already «guaranteed» entails a breakdown of the compressor.
