The development and development of the country’s car service market, which occurred for more than two decades of the latest history, a priori suggests some summary of the results: what ultimately happened as a result? What is the modern model of the Russian car service, what does it differ from foreign car service markets, what trends are dominated today in the Russian market, how will they change the appearance of the average maintenance center for cars? Stabilization of oil prices and even some growth in the past six months, improving the global economic situation, as well as the removal of all or almost all restrictions led to a significant increase in demand for cars. Due to the stops of the semiconductor production, there was even a shortage of some models. The changes affected not only the market for new cars, the demand was changed and for used cars.

The consequence of these trends of the so-called new reality are changes in various indicators, which to one degree or another affect the frequency and intensity of the service of cars. One of them are the average mileage and the timing of ownership. The growth of the mileage and the timing of the possession of a very significant characteristic and feature of the postgraduate period. Today, a decrease in the intensity of public transport use is recorded, at the same time the intensity of the use of personal cars is growing, including for long-distance travel. This affects the magnitude of the mileages: they not only recovered until the values ​​of 2019, but also exceed them.

But first things first. Today, the Russian fleet is one of the most age, in comparison with other developed and even developing countries. The average age of registered cars in the Russian Federation is 13.9 years, whereas in the US, it does not exceed 11.9 years, in Germany — 9.8, and in China and at all 5.3 years. This is stated in a study conducted by Gruzdev-Analyze.

However, in the Russian Federation there is a large gap between the registered and moving fleet. The average age of a moving fleet of cars in the Russian Federation is 9.9 years, which is 4 years less than the age of the country. For comparison: in Germany, the average age of the registered fleet is 9.8 years, and moving — 9.6. This is important for understanding what repairs and operations will be in demand for a hundred. The addiction here is as follows: the older car park, the more damage, the more technically complex repairs will be in demand from customers. This indicator also affects the structure of the spare parts market.

An important factor for the operation of the autoservice market is the average mileage of cars. In 2020, this figure in the Russian Federation was recorded at the level of 12,846 km, while the mileage in comparison with the previous 2019 grew slightly (12,719 km).

In principle, the Russian market has a great potential for the growth of the average mileage. For comparison: in the USA, where the car is part, with a significant, American lifestyle, and the main means of mobility of the American population was its own car, the average mileage of which in 2020 amounted to 20 174 km.

In recent years, the car service market in Russia has increased significantly, its structural indicators have changed. This is evidenced by the fact that today in the Russian Federation there are 50.3 thousand car services. This number includes completely different enterprises: garages, tireage, large dealer service centers.

However, it is interesting that comparison is. With comparable averages of the moving park, the average mileage of one car and the total amount of passenger cars, the number of auto-service enterprises in Russia is still about one and a half times lower than in Germany, where there are 83,400 car service enterprises. This speaks only about one thing: the country’s car service market remained the potential for extensive development, in other words, increase the number of hundred.

It is important to pay attention not only to absolute numbers, but also relative. In the same FRG, one service accounts for an average of 577 cars, and in the Russian Federation — 978.

It is surprising that in Russia, as in developed countries, like the United States and Germany, as well as in China, the car arrival in the car service is almost the same. The average number of cars per year does not exceed two times, it is even somewhat less in Germany — 1.9. Thus, it is not necessary to expect more random frequencies. And their increase cannot be a factor in the development of the service.

However, there is another source for the potential growth of the car service market. This presence in the structure of the repair of cars is huge by the standards of developed markets the share of independent repairs. In the Russian Federation, this indicator leaves an unprecedented value — 31%. Moreover, it was excluded such simple operations that can be carried out in car services, as the topical fiber liquid, or replacing the wiper brushes, etc.

In developed markets, such a resource, as an independent service and repair of the car by the owner, almost exhausted, it suffices to assess such an indicator on the market in Germany (6%). In turn, in the young and emerging China market, in fact, there is no tradition of independent repair of your car by the owner (2%). Against this background, the United States looks in an amazing way, where 18% of car owners are engaged in independent repair, which is due not only to the special system of settlement, but also traditions. In the US market, in contrast to the two above-mentioned countries, independent repair of car owners is supported by the presence of a huge network of auto parts stores, the number of which exceeds 64,000 outlets. In the Russian Federation, such outlets are twice as smaller, and in a behavioral aspect, a factor of economy prevails with independent repair.

In the main car service in developed countries, drivers are not taken, which bring their spare parts bought in third-party stores with them.

However, in Russia this is a common practice. Almost one third (32%) drivers attend service with their spare parts. In the US, the share of such drivers 5%, in Germany 2%, and in China’s emerging market such practice is simply absent as a phenomenon. Moreover, in Russia, often even when delegating repair, the service drivers have the opportunity to choose the brand and origin of spare parts. Thus, car services lose revenue from such behavior of domestic car owners. In turn, representatives of spare parts manufacturers and consumables are simply obliged to carry out advertising campaigns and campaigns, since without the recognition of the brand in Russia it is impossible to work.

There is nothing surprising that, in terms of the average cost of the engine competition, Russia is inferior to quite significantly to other markets. On average, one machine in the domestic service station costs the car owner at $ 80, while in Germany, the client leaves an average of three times a large amount ($ 244). Accordingly, the volume of the car service market has several times a large container.

What affects the choice

But it is not worth exaggerating the value of the savings factor when servicing and repairing a car. This is not the main factor when choosing a car service. Out ofeconomic reasons come to the forehead in the selection criteria. In the first place, the Russian motorist acts as a criterion for confidence in the quality of repair, as well as service with good reputation and positive reviews. And only in third place is the criterion «Low prices», which indicated 38% of motorists. At the same time, in the markets of developed countries, confidence in the quality of repair prevails over all other factors. Only in the fast-growing market of China car owners still put in the first place low prices (54%) of independent service.

The hierarchy of the criteria of the modern Russian car owner looks in this way. In the first place to confidence in the quality of repair (43%), a service with a good image (38%), low price (38%), efficiency in work and a small repair period (34%), convenient location of the customer service (24%), Good consulting (12%), friendly and experienced personnel (8%), habit (7%).

Structure for growth

After a sufficiently long term in two decades of development of the car service market, such a structure has been formed in Russia, which laid a certain potential for development and growth (diagram). The structure is characterized by a sufficiently low share of the dealership service (16%). For comparison, on the developed market of Germany, its share of 26%. In the old markets, his share is incomparably higher, as well as on the rapidly developing Chinese market (up to 50%), where the age of cars of its «young» park, which is under warranty affects this indicator.

Also, the Russian car service market is characterized by a high proportion of so-called «other» car services, read garages. The network segment of the auto-service market in the country is still 9% (in Germany — 17%). And this figure lates high growth potential. Today, in the territory of the Russian Federation, Vianor has more than 450 car service points, in the Exxon Mobile network — more than 400, Fit Service — 250. Of course, it is incomparably with the number of services in US networks, where the number of services reaches several thousand units.
